The Battle of Midway (1942): Color Documentary

A color documentary short that portrays the decisive battle of Midway. The naval/air confrontation between the carrier forces of Japan and the U.S. is considered to be the turning point of World War II in the Pacific. Directed by John Ford.

Despite the freakish Betty White-sounding narration, this is probably the coolest documentary I have seen in ages. And it is 68 years old. Do yourself a favor. Watch. Listen. Learn.

Daniel Espírito Santo is a Portuguese photographer based in Lisbon.

I'm really digging this photo set he calls Motorcycle Diaries, although the classic Ariel definitely takes second billing to the achingly beautiful mulher riding tandem.

A couple of readers of this silly website have asked me about the knife I've used in previous posts. I have a veritable drawer full of old pocket-knives leftover from the days when I used to tool around the wilderness *gasp* for fun; from Swiss Army to Buck.

I don't get out camping as much as I used to (ok fine - at least 10 years), but I still make a point to walk through the camp supply section whenever in sporting goods stores. Even if you're not an outdoorsy person you can always use a good knife.

This particular one is a Case. Don't quote me on this, but I believe it is the Stockman. Currently a subsidiary of the Zippo Manufacturing Company, the Case brand has been around for well over 100 years. Now that's quality bub.

On this day in history we lost two Hollywood Legends.

In case you've been living in a box, movie star Tony Curtis died today at age 85.

And up-and-coming young film actor James Dean tragically passed...in 1955.
